The film’s basic storyline feels far-fetched, as Kapil and Saumya decide to take a drastic step, such as separating (even if only on paper) to acquire a house when they are not in dire need. Vicky Kaushal performs ably and gets the small-town penny-pinching guy act well. He emotes perfectly in a scene at the hospital when Kapil and Saumya have a heart-to-heart talk to iron out their differences. Overall, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is an enjoyable one-time-watch for the funny punchlines, far-out characters and performances. But the unconvincing story and the temperate screenplay prevent it from reaching its full potential.

In the way it gets going, Zara Hatke is pure sitcom territory. Kapil is a yoga instructor, Soumya is a tutor; their two-year-old marriage still has spark. But the film never quite builds on its comic potential, by throwing a tonal switch somewhere down in its second-half. As for Kaushal and Khan, the former does better at his ‘kanjoos’ self (representing people who deduct portions from their ‘aaj’ to save for their ‘kal’); the latter needs to build in significantly more variation in delivery. Zara Hatke Zara Bachke movie cast: Vicky Kaushal, Sara Ali Khan, Himanshu Kohli, Neeraj Sood, Inamamulhaq, Sharib Hashmi, Rakesh Bedi, Sushmita Mukherjee

Vicky Kaushal delivers a stellar performance as this typical middle-class guy whose 'ways of saving' knows no bounds. 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke' uses songs to organically further the narrative. These musical deliberations blend well with the plot. 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke' uses songs to organically further the narrative. These musical deliberations blend well with the plot. The story of 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke' is set in Indore and looks well designed too, especially with the use of Indori lingo, Poha jokes and whatnot. All characters fit into the middle-class setup of the small township.

All hell breaks lose when the two families get to know of what Kapil and Saumya have done but they are still unaware of their plan to buy a flat. Laxman Utekar’s direction is nice but his narration does have its limitations mainly because of the script. Vicky Kaushal does a very good job in the role of Kapil Dubey. He shines in comic as well as dramatic and melodramatic scenes. Song picturisations (Ganesh Acharya, Vijay Ganguly and Ruel Dausan Varindani) ought to have been far better. Saumya wants to shift into a new house with hubby but they can’t afford a new house with their modest means.
