Vidyut Jammwal does well as Dev. But his action sequences lack that punch and edge, he is so well-known for. Anupam Kher is alright as N.S. Awasthi. Secondly, the drama is so devoid of excitement that the audience rarely get involved in it, instead watching it unfold, as mere spectators. Sankalp’s direction is weak. He has simply not been able to recreate the excitement, anxiety and thrill of the real-life drama — neither in the script (co-written by him) nor in the narration nor even in the performances of the actors. On the whole, IB 71 is a dull fare and, therefore, will go quite unnoticed at the box-office.

The film revolves around Dev Jammwal (Vidyut Jammwal), an intelligence officer who receives critical information about Pakistan and China's impending attacks on Indian soil within a mere ten-day timeframe. Vidyut Jammwal portrays his character with utmost control and restraint. Apart from two action sequences, Vidyut relies more on his acting skills and delivers a sincere performance. IB 71” is an engaging watch that sheds light on a remarkable chapter of history, instilling a sense of pride in our intelligence network. If you have an affinity for period action thrillers, this film successfully checks the boxes.

Writer-director Sankalp Reddy deserves a mention for bringing out the untold stories from the pages of hidden Indian history and celebrating unsung heroes. Vishal Jethwa plays a 17-year-old Kashmiri extremist, Kasim Qureshi. He fights for free Kashmir with his cousin, Ashfaq Qureshi (Faizan Khan), and they are used as pawns by Dev. But there are shortcomings too. One of the significant drawbacks of this film is the sluggish first half. You might lose interest in between and find it too slow for a spy thriller.

Dev (Vidyut Jammwal) is introduced as the flawless spy at the very onset of the film. Vidyut Jammwal is good with his performance. There are several sequences where he could have been better, but the character demands that he shows minimal emotions. When there is Vidyut, The spying continues for too long, breaking the pace. It gets painstakingly slow at points and even when Vidyut is out to fight, one might not feel a similar thrill like they always do. However, the show-stealer here is Vishal Jethwa. He might have limited screen space, but he simply excels in whatever he has been asked to do.

Overall, IB 71 is a decent film to watch. The film keeps you hooked.  Sankalp Reddy, the director of the movie, gives us the backstory of how Pakistani planned an attack on India. He then takes us through the incident with proper details. Some true events need to be told and heard and IB 71 is definitely one of them. The first half of the film is slow as it takes you through the start of the story. However, it’s the second half of the film that picks up the pace and the story. A similar thing happened to me when I watched the movie.
