Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Trailer

The film kicks off this time with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), who is having the usual problems with her cop father who, not knowing that she is Spider-Woman. Like its main protagonist who can’t hold still, dipping and soaring, swinging and swaying, Spider-Man: Across the Spider Verse is a restless, firing-on-all-pistons rollercoaster ride. It loses its way in the middle, caught up in its own genius, taking one too many swings, but builds up to an unexpectedly spine-tingling finale. It doesn’t always land on its feet, but it is wondrous to be there when it does.

Writers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham along with directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, and screenplay writers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller and David Callaham bring to life every Spider-Man comic books fan’s dream on the big screen. Keeping the tradition of the first film’s impressive playlist going, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also boasts of some really good songs. The film is packed with Easter eggs in almost every scene. It is everything and more a Spidey fan could have asked for.

The Morales family dynamic continues to be critical to the story, and Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) plays a more significant role this time. Across the Spider-Verse’ takes the multiverse concept and pushes it to a place unprecedented with other films of its ilk. The visual aspect of this film is staggering, as the animators and artists continue to bend the limits of the medium. Each Spider-Person has its distinct visual style, extending into the universe they hail from. While setting up an essential third outing, this sequel immerses us in a far deeper and more layered story that promises to be rewarding.

Without spoiling much, I can reveal that the film does end on a note that directly sets up part three, the already announced Beyond the Spider-Verse. The way the different universes and dimensions have been constructed and depicted is sheer genius. The film painstakingly, and in great detail, marks subtle and obvious differences between different worlds that are quite apparent through different art styles. But in isolation, as a standalone movie, Across the Spider-Verse disappoints, largely because of the expectations one had from it. Hey, but if you are Indian, you can totally go cheer for our boy Pavitr Prabhakar from Mumbattan!

Miles Morales is threatened by an enemy, who has a connection with his catastrophic spider bite and due to this the latter is facing an existential crisis. All the desi conversation around chai-tea and traffic brings a huge smile to your face. Without delving into the spoilers, we can say that the film is a fun ride but sometimes there is too much of everything. In a movie. One of the biggest highlights for me was our very own desi Spider-Man aka Pavitr Prabhakar, who wins you instantly in Mumbattan. While the sequel doesn’t match up to its predecessor, it is a fun ride, which you can enjoy with kids.
